  • The race was the first to use the new One Design class, the Volvo Ocean 65
  • Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing skipper Ian Walker became the first British skipper to win the race.
  • Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing became the first team to win the double – securing both the overall trophy and the In-Port Race Series.
  • Team Vestas Wind grounded on shoals during Leg 2, some 200nm from Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The incident sparked a race against time to get the boat fixed and return to the race, which they eventually did ahead of Leg 8.
  • Dongfeng Race Team took to the start line as underdogs, featuring several rookie Chinese crew, but were the surprise package of the edition, finishing on the podium.
  • Team SCA, led by Samantha Davies, was the first all-female team in 12 years – and won a hat-trick of In-Port Races, as well as an historic finish into Lorient.
  • Charlie Enright and Mark Towill, leaders of Team Alvimedica, completed their first Volvo Ocean Races.
  • Dongfeng Race Team dismasted just miles from Cape Horn on Leg 5 – and were forced to suspend racing. They stopped in nearby Ushuaia and then motored on to Itajaí where they were fitted with a new rig.
  • Cyclone Pam forced the fleet to restart a day later than planned from Auckland, with winds of over 200mph causing chaos in the region.
  • Team SCA’s Sophie Ciszek scooped the Hans Horrevoets Rookie Award after an impressive debut race.
