Lisbon is hosting the race for a third consecutive edition and this time it’s with a bit of a twist.
Since 2016, the city has been home to the Volvo Ocean Race Boatyard, a permanent facility where our team of boatbuilding experts have been working round the clock to prepare the fleet for the 2017-18 edition. Don’t miss the chance to check out the Boatyard at the Race Village while you’re here on a visit. It’s a fascinating look at just how much work goes into getting the boats ready to race.

A sense of history.
The capital of Portugal is Europe’s oldest major capital city – the heart of a vast maritime empire in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Today, Lisbon is a major economic centre with a population of about half a million in the actual city, but it’s impossible to miss the sense of history as you wander the mazy streets of the old town or sip a drink in one of the innumerable bars. Take the vintage tram number 28 for a great starter tour of the city centre. And don’t miss the fortified tower at Belem, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The daily average is a sweet 18C, with a drop to just 11C at night during the month of November. It might rain a little – this is an Atlantic coast after all – but with a monthly average of just 16mm we’re not too worried.

Alternative: Take a tram to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos near our Race Village and enjoy one of the world famous Pastéis de Belém egg custard pastries. Top tip ­– Jog the rest of the way to burn off the calories, as chances are you’ll want to go back and buy more of these moreish treats.

Team Brunel win an incredible Mirpuri Foundation In-Port Race Lisbon. The sprint around the Portuguese city had a little bit of everything – including an unforgettable photo finish! 

Bouwe Bekking’s Team Brunel fended off a late charge by MAPFRE to win the Mirpuri Foundation In-Port Race Lisbon on Friday afternoon.

Conditions were challenging, to say the least, with squalls bringing rain and gusty, shifting winds. Not only that, but the confines of the mouth of the Tagus River meant a short leg length, with four laps of the race course – plenty of manoeuvres and boat handling for the teams.

“I think we did well, we’ve made huge steps as a team,” Bekking said following the race. “I mean it’s always nice to win but I think we sailed pretty nicely today. There was a huge wind shift at the end and that always makes the decisions tricky but I think we made the right calls. We sailed very conservative - as you will have seen we kept our big sail up, kept it simple and that worked very well for us today.”
