Sideshow makes it three in Volvo Ocean Race game
British virtual skipper Sideshow became the first player to win three legs of the Volvo Ocean Race game today as he snatched Leg 8 victorySideshow – aka Mark Campbell-James – inched to glory in one of the closest finishes in the 2017-18 edition of the game.
Approaching the finish line in Newport, USA, three of the game’s biggest hitters – Sideshow, Tessa94 and Marcusbelgicus – were within 15 seconds of one another.
Campbell-James managed to hold off his rivals to take the win, with Tessa94 coming second and Marcusbelgicus third. It’s no surprise that the three players also occupy the top three spots on the overall leaderboard.
To win again feels really good. It was a bit of a surprise right at the end as it was so close with Marcus and Tessa. Only 15 seconds covered the three of us which is just a few boat lengths.
Campbell-James.
Campbell-James said his winning move was due to clever sailing after the Doldrums. “From the very start I went a slightly more southerly course than the Zezo router was suggesting and this turned out to be a really good move that got me a mile or two ahead of my main rivals,” he added.
“Fire-Ket, for example, did this to a larger extent and he had a big lead off Recife. After the equator most of the race was down to positioning yourself versus the fleet and then in the last day I was trying to hard cover to protect my tiny lead."
“The top three in the overall rankings finished in the top three in this leg so now we will have pulled ahead more and will probably be hard to catch. I haven’t seen the final ranking yet but I’m guessing Tessa and I will be pretty close for the overall lead and the next leg will be really important.”
