Save the Albatross Campaign

© Save the Albatross Campaign

The Volvo Ocean Race introduced an albatross named Wisdom as the mascot of the race. Wisdom was named after a 61-year-old Laysan albatross, thought to be the oldest wild bird in North America. Wisdom had a real-life presence in the race villages through soft toys and a costume worn by volunteers, bringing excitement to children, who were able to ask Wisdom questions about her life and have their photographs taken with her.

A six-minute film documenting the plight of the albatross was shown in the Keep the Ocean’s Clean dome at each stopover.
