Something about him that you don't know: Fontes was involved in a last-minute swap deal minutes before the Leg 1 start, when, short of crew for the race from Alicante to Lisbon, team AkzoNobel asked Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag if they could borrow the team's reserve for one leg. The Hong Kong boat agreed, and Fontes jumped onboard the blue boat – swapping team kit during the Sailor's Parade!
Who he is: Having sailed 100,000 miles Fontes notched up significant ocean miles before joining the Volvo Ocean Race in 2017-18. He started sailing at the age of 8 and turned pro in 2005. Fontes was crowned Portuguese Match Racing Champion in 2007 and 2008 then turned his hand to solo sailing in the Class Mini. He finished 3rd in the Trofeu MAP in 2014 (300 miles) and 13th in the Mini Transat 2015 (4,000 miles).
