Sam Bourne
United Kingdom-
4The Ocean Race
Department: The Boatyard
What he does: Manages the service support program with the suppliers for all Volvo Ocean 65 deck gear (winches, blocks, travellers, clutches, sailing hydraulics). Also manages the infrastructure logistics for The Boatyard as it travels around the world.
Who he is: Born and raised in and around boats, Sam first wanted to get involved with the Volvo Ocean Race (then Whitbread) when he saw the mighty Lion New Zealand in the UK in 1986. It was the biggest boat he had ever seen with five spreaders on the mast....! Since then he has sailed competitively, studied naval architecture and small craft engineering, and moved towards the shore side of grand-prix yachting. He now spends his free time riding bikes or hanging out with his girls, Rachel and baby Emily in his Glasgow home.
He speaks: English, Scottish and un poco Espanol.
Something about him that you don't know: In the last race, Sam travelled around South America and through the Magellan Strait onboard a ship with the damaged Abu Dhabi yacht 'Azzam’. They went further south than the sailing team, within 200 miles of Cape Horn.
